Alan Paton, South Africa author, foe of apartheid

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) Alan Paton, South Africa's
best-known author and for years a leading voice against apartheid,
died early today of throat cancer, his wife said. He was 85.
Mr. Paton died at his estate outside Durban, his wife, Anne,
said.
He was hospitalized last week, and doctors attempted to implant
a tube through a tumor in his esophagus so he could swallow solids.
The operation was unsuccessful, and a more extensive one was
ruled out in St. Augustine's Hospital in Durban. Mr. Paton was
released Monday to spend his final days at home, his wife said.
