The young man thought it sounded great. Powdered saffron is best to cook with, the Egyptian spice seller said, because it dissolves instantly.

"I knew what saffron threads look like," Dave Wilder said. But the powder seemed so convenient by comparison. Wilder bought the powder at the Cairo souk and returned to the United States with his souvenir.

"As soon as I showed Mom the bright orange powder she knew it wasn't saffron powder I'd been sold but ground turmeric."
