Even if you're not a great lover of Latin American fiction - if, for example, you find it too murkily mystical or political or literary - you still might like Jorge Amado. A prolific and much-praised Brazilian, he gained popularity here in the late 1970s with the paperbacks of his novels Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. His particular brew of drama, sex and vibrant good humor might be called Latin American Lite: lots of satisfying story, with no surreal or allegorical aftertaste.
