"Who invented the pancake?" my wife asked me when I told her we
were going out for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday to check out some
of my favorite places for pancakes.
"I'm curious as to why you use the word `invented,' " I said.
"Things like pancakes are not invented: They are, like lots of other
dishes, the result of a cooking accident. Somebody set out to make
one thing, something strange happened, and they ended up with
something else. That's how great dishes are born."
