Critics who call Michael Stanley Dukakis an outmoded '60s-style liberal misunderstand either the term or the man.

The Massachusetts governor, who finished third in Monday's Iowa caucuses, is of another breed - the button-down '50s liberal.

These liberals were earnest reformers for whom "working within the system" was not an option to be debated but a duty to be performed.

They unquestioningly answered the military draft. They supported the NAACP but wouldn't have dreamed of the later voting-rights and antiwar confrontations.
