The concept of the magic lantern was first described in 1646 by Athanasius Kircher, a German scientist and Jesuit priest. Kircher's proposed device used a simple oil lamp and a lens to project and enlarge transparent color painting on glass, an unprecedented feat made possible by centuries of development in the science of optics.
