`An apple a day," it's said, "keeps the doctor away." A pair of
scientists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture would like to
update that old saw to "An apple a day keeps osteoporosis away."
A disease that renders bones more brittle and thus more prone to
fracture, osteoporosis afflicts up to 20 million Americans, most of
them postmenopausal women. The disease is thought to be caused
primarily by the female body's reduced production of the hormone
estrogen. This decrease occurs in the five to seven years after the
