`An apple a day," it's said, "keeps the doctor away." A pair of scientists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture would like to update that old saw to "An apple a day keeps osteoporosis away."

A disease that renders bones more brittle and thus more prone to fracture, osteoporosis afflicts up to 20 million Americans, most of them postmenopausal women.
