Lack of difficulty? Overscoring? Palatine may have both, but early indicators point Palatine toward its first-ever state title. Coach Sandy Oldham has guided the Pirates to runner-up finishes in 1979 and 1985 but now Palatine is the consensus choice as the team to beat.

Top-rated Palatine scored a school-record 150 in a dual meet with Hersey, defeated No. 2 Resurrection at the Glenbrook South invitational and knocked off No. 3 Rich Central at Naperville North, scoring an area-best (145) for an invitational.
