The U.S. Constitution isn't the only red-hot-white-and-blue charter celebrating a bicentennial.

The Magna Carta of the Midwest is, too.

It is the 1787 Northwest Ordinance, which provided for government organization in the terrority that now includes Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and a part of Minnesota. It boasted a bill of rights and ban on slavery before the Constitution was even ratified or Abraham Lincoln was born.

A team of scholars is giving the ordinance top billing in a new touring exhibit, "Liberty's Legacy," which opened Wednesday at the Newberry Library.
