Army chief stages coup, takes over in Transkei

UMTATA, Transkei The newly elected government of this nominally independent tribal homeland within South Africa was overthrown Wednesday by troops loyal to the army commander, who immediately declared martial law and suspended the constitution.

Maj. Gen. Bantu Holomisa, 31, announced that he had formed a "military council" to rule Transkei after learning that Prime Minister Stella Sigcau was involved in large-scale corruption.

"It is a complete coup," Holomisa declared. "The army has taken over."
