The first retrospective of the German artist Anselm Kiefer, now at the Art Institute of Chicago, has been long awaited. Kiefer, one of the best contemporary artists, works with multiple media. He breathes life into art, which has become more an object of consumerism than contemplation.

Kiefer first hit the art scene in 1969 at the age of 24. His early exhibits consisted primarily of books and watercolors.
