Holsteins' demise is one for the ages
|
Although it is one of the country's most empathetic music rooms,
what has sunk Holsteins is an inability to cultivate a new audience.
The club's image is set in plaid shirts, pipe smoke and receding
hairlines.
This stereotyping isn't the fault of Ed Holstein, who in recent
years has booked the club with adventure and passion, with a range of
performers from Ramblin' Jack Elliott to Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper.
Rather, it's a problem of the city's categorized and parochial
tastes. The chances of a Holsteins' audience crossing over to
Cabaret Metro are about the same as Joni Mitchell's ...
