Botulism food poisoning remains a health problem
|
Botulism is an uncommon but serious type of food poisoning. It
is caused by the most deadly of all natural poisons. This poison
(toxin) blocks transmission of impulses from nerves to muscles and
thus leads to severe weakness, paralysis or even death.
The toxin is produced by bacteria (Clostridium botulinum) that
commonly inhabit soil in the form of harmless spores. The spores are
hardy. High temperatures are required to kill them. By contrast,
