Belize: Bargains, beaches and jungle journeys

Tourists are a funny lot. We complain about overcrowded islands
and mourn the lack of intimate hotels. We dread the rise of
mass-volume travel and yearn for the Hawaii or Caribbean "that once
was."
Yet when we learn of an under-visited tropical paradise less
than two hours from Miami, we shun it, because of its dreaded
location - in Central America.
Thereby we make a major error. We miss vacation pleasures of a
high order in a delightfully mixed-up nation. It's English-speaking
but of Mayan origin, a crazy-quilt of ethnic groups living in perfect
harmony and striving to develop a tourist ...
