Ferries sailing back into N.Y. commuting

NEW YORK Ferry boats, a transportation tradition from the time
Dutch settlers colonized New Amsterdam in 1624, are making a
comeback.
Twenty years after the last private line stopped plying New York
waters, 10 new ferry routes carrying more than 4,000 commuters daily
between Manhattan and Brooklyn, Queens and New Jersey have sprung up
in the last year.
In addition, the city is cleaning up, repairing and improving
service on the Staten Island ferry, which was established in 1755 and
now carries 80,000 people a day for 25 cents round-trip across New
York Harbor, the best buy in town.
