Taking a `Simon says' approach to Sen. Simon

Respondents to one of his polls tricked George Gallup Jr., he
told me, in the '60s. He was trying to ascertain the level of
religious belief and practice in America, and people told him both
had declined. This confirmed widespread talk of the period about
"the death of religion."
But Mr. Gallup thought there was something wrong with the poll.
He wanted to test it from a different angle. So he went out again
and asked people if they had themselves grown less intent in their
belief or their religious practices. They answered, almost
universally, that they had not.
