Dizzy Gillespie never learned that art is supposed to be serious business.

On the basis of his musical credentials alone, the trumpeter belongs in the first rank of jazz giants: as a composer, an improvisor, a bebop trailblazer and an explorer of Afro-Cuban rhythmic internationalism. Even so, he remains known even more for his personality than his playing. He's the archetypal bebop hipster, the master of the irrepressible jive. A lot of folks probably figure that John Birks Gillespie was born Dizzy.
