Death frees Rudolf Hess from prison

WEST BERLIN Rudolf Hess, who died Monday at age 93 after
spending four decades in brooding captivity, strode side by side with
Adolf Hitler on the Nazis' march to power, but his days of glory
ended when he parachuted into Scotland in 1941 on what he called a
"peace mission."
As deputy fuehrer (leader) to Hitler, Mr. Hess wielded vast
influence in the early years of the Third Reich. The world was
amazed by his solo landing in Scotland, when Germany was at the apex
of its wartime power.
He was a prisoner for the rest of his life, and he never
