Hodler's art speaks in silence

"Ferdinand Hodler: Landscapes" is a glittering jewel of an
exhibition - 30 Alpine scenes by the Swiss painter whose
well-deserved renown has grown steadily in recent years.
Sponsored by the Union Bank of Switzerland and on view at the
Art Institute of Chicago through Aug. 30, the show focuses on a
single aspect of Hodler's production, illuminating his rapid
development from a rather unremarkable Realist to a shining Symbolist
who discovered mystical meanings beneath the surface of the visible
world.
