Before 1910, most American houses were patterned after the designs of earlier European buildings - Greek temples, renaissance villas, medieval cottages and Gothic cathedrals.

About 1900, however, a number of American architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles and Henry Greene, developed the first popular modern styles - architectural fashions that were not influenced by old-world structures.
