Angola holding downed U.S. pilot on spy charge

LISBON, Portugal (AP) Angolan authorities are holding the American pilot of a light aircraft they said was shot down while possibly on a spying mission for South Africa, the official Angolan news agency ANGOP said yesterday.

It said the Beechcraft Bonanza was downed Tuesday by Angolan jet fighters in southern Angola, 78 miles north of the border with the South African-controlled territory of South-West Africa, also known as Namibia.
