The times Annie Burgess's importance to the Washington Mystics is most noticeable is when she is not on the court. Burgess, the team's 33-year-old starting point guard, has not played in six games because of back and calf injuries. Every game she missed, Washington struggled.

The Mystics play so much better and look so much more organized under Burgess's steady presence. The offense runs smoothly. The ball moves with a purpose. Players get open shots. Her play isn't flashy, but subtly effective.
