Chinese black beans deliver taste that's surprisingly good

I know I'm not the only one who, as a kid, tippled the vanilla bottle to get a taste of that delicious aroma. After all, how it smells is how it ought to taste, right? Right, but there clearly is something wrong with vanilla.

I didn't know how Chinese fermented black beans smelled until I used them for the first time. By then, I was grown up. But I was reminded of my childhood swigs of vanilla when what I found to be an exotic (even grotesque) odor began creeping around my nose.
