Quake kills 8 in Greek city

ATHENS, Greece A powerful earthquake toppled buildings and
damaged scores of homes yesterday in the southwestern port city of
Kalamata, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 200,
officials said.
The government declared a state of emergency and began
airlifting medical supplies and tents to the city in the Peloponnesus
region 110 miles southwest of Athens.
The earthquake, which struck at 10:27 p.m. and measured 6.2 on
the Richter scale, collapsed many older homes and a five-story
apartment building in the Nissaki area of Kalamata, a police
spokesman said.
