Twyla Tharp's troupe bolsters its ballet bent

Some dance fans consider Twyla Tharp a ballet choreographer. She did, after all, create "Push Comes to Shove" and "Nine Sinatra Songs," works associated with Mikhail Baryshnikov.

And Tharp's first hit with a national, general audience was "Deuce Coupe," created in the mid-1970s for the Joffrey Ballet. She mixed Joffrey's dancers with members of her own company and sent them slithering and bopping across the stage to tunes by the Beach Boys.
