The WarBy Marguerite Duras. Pantheon. $13.95. Queen of the French literary scene, Marguerite Duras has only recently begun to attract a following in this country. Her screenplay for Hiroshima, Mon Amour and her recent novelized memoir The Lover have created a cult following of critics who worship her spare, Hemingwayesque prose and her stark images.

It's hard to know how to read this collection of pieces about Duras' activities in the French Resistance during World War II. She presents them as memoir, claiming to have rediscovered the manuscripts after they had lain forgotten for years ...
