U. of I. builds wind tunnel to test hypersonic jet engine
|
University of Illinois researchers are building a wind tunnel
to test engine designs for a hypersonic jet that could reach Japan in
3 1/2 hours. The hypersonic aircraft would travel on the edge of
space at five times the speed of sound. The wind tunnel is part of
an effort begun by President Reagan to develop such an aircraft by
1995. The wind tunnel study will last three years and cost $930,000.
Huge holding tanks will release highly compressed air to create
artificial winds of 3,000 m.p....
