Sidney Lens, peace activist, union organizer and lecturer

Sidney Lens, 74, an author, lecturer, peace activist and labor union organizer who for 50 years forcefully urged America to pursue less militaristic foreign policies, died of cancer Wednesday in Bernard Mitchell Hospital.

Mr. Lens had been undergoing chemotherapy since January for a malignant melanoma that was first diagnosed in 1978.

Mr. Lens, of the Near North Side, brought the mass-protest style of his union-organizing days to play in opposing the Vietnam War, nuclear weapons, and U.S. military involvement in Latin America, and in calling for the impeachment of President Nixon.
