Paris in the early years of this century was a hotbed of
artistic innovation. Although Paul Cezanne died in 1906, the example
of his work was close at hand and his influence remained inescapable.
Pablo Picasso, recently arrived from Spain, moved with enormous
rapidity from his Blue Period through his Rose Period to his Negro
Period and then invented Cubism; Henri Matisse and his followers
developed Fauvism; and Robert Delaunay, slightly later, began
working towardOrphism. It's no wonder that the city became a magnet
