In the beginning, there was the twig.

And the Neanderthals found it perfection itself for cleaning their fangs: Twigs were low-tech, cheap, widely available and biodegradable.

The idea held up for a long, long time. Twigs used to scrape or rub the teeth have been found in Etruscan and Egyptian tombs.
