French coins celebrate Statue of Liberty centennial
|
It is a story every schoolchild in America knows: France gave
Auguste Bartholdi's statue, "Liberty Giving Light to the World," to
America as a symbol of friendship 100 years ago.
This is for the same Statue of Liberty that Lee Iacocca has
helped raise more than $250 million to restore in time for the
centennial observance this summer. A sizable portion of those funds
came from the sale of commemorative coins issued by the U.S.
government - a $5 gold piece, a silver dollar and a half dollar.
