The first time we tried it, things worked out well.

We quit paying tribute to Tripoli and we earned a measure of respect among the nations of Europe. The fact was established that we did have some military muscle. It was also plain that we would be around engaging in trade, particularly in that ancient center of commerce, the Mediterranean Sea.

However, in the slow era of sailing ships, winning the Barbary Wars took the United States something like 15 years. In fits and starts, the wars continued from 1800 until 1815.
