Jean Genet, 75, acclaimed, controversial French author

PARIS Jean Genet, the French dramatist, novelist and poet who created a disturbing world of homosexuals, murderers and thieves by drawing on his own experiences, died here yesterday. He was 75.

His publisher, Gallimard, said Mr. Genet succumbed to throat cancer in the modest hotel room that had been his home for several years.

Mr. Genet began writing in prison. He was reprieved from a life sentence for theft in 1948 after his cause was taken up by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, who championed the works of the man he called a "liar, thief, pervert, saint and martyr."
