Mushrooms thrive in produce aisle // Small farmers feel growing pressure

Once a rarity in American groceries, mushrooms have been popping up on produce shelves and in market stalls everywhere.

But despite the increasing popularity of these squat little vegetables that grow in the dark, some small producers of mushrooms complain of tough times.

Canned imports, increased government regulation and rising labor costs in this labor-intensive business have taken their toll on growers and their profits, despite steadily increasing mushroom consumption throughout the country.
