`Color Purple' is affirmative action // Black characters gain the freedom to be seen as three dimensional

Isn't it time to liberate serious black movies from the need to be
uplifting and positive? Isn't it time to allow black characters in
the movies to reflect the full range of human attributes - to allow
them to be villains as well as heroes, flawed as well as strong?
Isn't it time for black roles to enter the mainstream of movie
characters, in which some people are good and some people are evil,
and that's just the way the world turns?
I ask these questions in light of the backlash tha...
