Algebra Poses a Problem of Timing; Not Taking Class Early Could Close Gateway to Sciences
|
First of two articles
Gunston Middle School in Arlington and Parkland Middle School in
Rockville, 15 miles apart across the Potomac River, are similar in
many ways. Two-thirds of their students are Hispanic or African
American. Slightly more than half of their students are poor enough
to qualify for federal lunch subsidies.
Yet, in one vital measure of student progress, there is a
significant difference. An aggressive effort at Gunston to prepare
more students for high school math and science put 40 percent of its
eighth-graders in algebra last school year, compared with 20 percent
at Parkland.
