August is the month for tomatoes. This year, judging by readers'
queries, has been a trying one for backyard farmer and fruit alike.
Drought and uneven and improper watering have harbored two
diseases the tomato grower can do without: leaf blight and blossom-
end rot.
The latter is particularly disheartening. Perfectly normal-
looking fruit will suddenly develop a spot that turns at first a
sickly green, then darkens to black. Often, this spot spreads until
