You don't often see the Archbishop of Canterbury at a cocktail
party, but when you do, it's best to make the most of it -
especially if you have the highly-trained brute insensitivity of a
newspaper journalist. Thus it was that I asked Dr Rowan Williams if
he saw a connection with America's unilateralism over Iraq (which he
had publicly criticised) and the decision of the US Episcopal Church
to ordain as a bishop the openly gay Gene Robinson.
Social convention - not to mention the effect of Sir David
Frost's champagne - prevents me from repeating Dr Williams' careful
response, but it was not ...
