SHORT STORIES W SOMERSET MAUGHAM ; BOOK OF A LIFETIME

I don't come from a bookish family. When I was growing up my
mother read Jean Plaidy's historical romances and my father read the
newspaper. My childhood reading I recall as haphazard, a highlight
being Treasure Island. My adult reading really began with the
stories of William Somerset Maugham. I would have been about 13 when
I first read them, and for me he opened the door to the world.
Maugham's stories are set in many places, some in England, some
in the France he made his home for most of his life; but the
essential Maugham story is set in the Far East or the Pacific. It
