William B. Ruger, 86, a flinty entrepreneur who turned a childhood fascination with guns into the largest U.S. firearms manufacturing company, died July 6 at his home in Prescott, Ariz. The cause of death was not reported.

He was co-founder and chairman emeritus of Sturm, Ruger & Co., the Connecticut-based manufacturer admired by sportsmen and collectors since selling its first pistol in 1949.
