Q. I have a hand-carved barometer that is not in working condition. It's 30 inches tall and is thought to be from Germany. What can you tell me about its history and value?

A. There are all sorts of barometers. There are instruments that use water, others that use mercury and still others that use an aneroid cell. "Aneroid," incidentally, is taken from the Greek and means "without liquid."
