Montgomery On the Mark; He 'Cannot Believe' Breaking Greene's Record

Tim Montgomery rattles off the number of 100-meter world records he has witnessed with the vexation of someone recalling a series of personal slaps in the face. He was in the field when Maurice Greene set the record in 1997. He was in the stadium when Donovan Bailey did it in '96. He was there when Leroy Burrell did it in '94.

On Saturday, finally, it was Montgomery's turn. In a half-empty stadium in Paris, in a depleted field, in a largely overlooked race, Montgomery sliced a hundredth of a second off Greene's record, finishing in 9.78 seconds.
