Andrew R. Cella Dies; D.C. Police Helicopter Pilot

Andrew Richard Cella, 41, who joined the D.C. police in 1989 as a patrolman and became a helicopter pilot on the force, died of kidney and liver failure Sept. 9 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. He lived in Germantown.

Mr. Cella participated in protective maneuvers during the Sept. 11 terror attacks. He told the publication Aviation Today that one of the most unsettling parts of the day was the news that a plane that turned out to be United Airlines Flight 93, which ultimately crashed in western Pennsylvania, was heading toward Washington's airspace.
