head of the Western defense alliance and a towering figure during
much of the Cold War, died July 16 at age 90.
A passionate adversary of Soviet communism but a diplomat par
excellence, the lanky Dutchman was hailed as a "great European" and
an outstanding figure in the history of the North Atlantic Alliance.
