A Modest Jurist's Last Majority; From Sports to High Court, Retired Justice Byron White Is Eulogized

Modest to the last, the Supreme Court justice formerly known as
"Whizzer" may have cringed once more.
The deeds of a man of law and action -- a star of the fledgling
National Football League, deputy attorney general, 31-year pillar of
the Supreme Court and defender of the Freedom Riders -- were such
that mere rhetoric was deemed unsuitable to describe his life and his
modesty during his funeral today at the Episcopal cathedral of Saint
John's Church in the Wilderness.
And so the eulogies for Justice Byron Raymond White drew on the
classics, comic books and the enduring ethos of the Old West ...
