A top Enron Corp. executive told Arthur Andersen chief executive Joseph F. Berardino a year ago that the energy company was doing a lot of complex financial transactions and needed more auditing expertise than it was getting, an Andersen spokesman said yesterday.

Berardino, along with the head of Andersen's Houston office and one of the firm's top audit executives, traveled to Houston in February 2001 and met with Enron's chief accounting officer, Richard Causey.
