Elisabeth Mann Borgese, 83, an activist for protecting the world's oceans and the last surviving child of German literary giant Thomas Mann, died of a respiratory infection Feb. 8 in a hospital in Samedan, Switzerland, near St. Moritz. She had become ill while on a ski trip.

Her father won the 1929 Nobel Prize for literature.
