The end is the beginning.
A movie's ending, the last emotional beat the audience takes out
of the theater, is the key to good word-of-mouth -- and good word-of-
mouth, more than reviews, more than newspaper advertising, and even
more than the Oscars that will be handed out Sunday night, is the key
to box office success. A disappointing ending is gross-receipts
death.
It also kills one of the great movie joys, post-viewing
