Former Greek Cypriot president Spyros Kyprianou, 69, a fierce
opponent of the war-divided island's breakaway Turkish state, died
March 12 at a hospital here of pelvic cancer.
Mr. Kyprianou, a leading figure among hard-line Greek Cypriots
opposed to giving concessions to the Turkish Cypriot minority, was
president until 1988 and remained influential in politics afterward.
