George Inness Landscapes

Painters of the Hudson River School, such as Thomas Cole and
Frederick Edwin Church and Asher Durand, can sometimes seem a little
dry and fussy, even naive, compared with their European counterparts.
A glorious exception is George Inness, who managed to pack as much
fervor and emotion into his landscapes as any beret-wearing Parisian
ever did. Inness gets a rare outing in a small but stunning
retrospective now at the venerable National Academy of Design in New
York, where Inness first showed work in 1844.
